[ It's in the early morning - or, at least, after everyone wakes up and congregate to the dining carriages. In Tidus's experience, it's the best way to catch anyone he's been meaning to chat with, even to schedule a later conversation when stomachs are more full.
But regardless of reasons, it still might be something of a surprise for Dennis that when he should walk in, he'll soon hear a 'Dennis!' call to him; and a familiar figure rising from the long dining table, showing a hand in greeting, with obvious intentions of making his way over to him.
[It's been a little over a week now that he's been here and it's still no less weird, but he's at least not as shell shocked as his first day.
If anything he does look forward to the good here, it's regular and usually pretty dang good. No complaints here. When he walks in to the dining carriage he'll hear his name and looks over where he'd heard it from, spoting a familiar face.]
No worries. What's up?
[Dennis asks when he comes over. Tidus had been real good to him when he first arrived, helped talk him.down out of a panic attack, he's definitely got time for him.]
You got time after breakfast? Me and another guy - Inigo, you know him? Blue hair? We were chatting about you the other day - nothing bad, [ he slips in with a small laugh. ] But we wanted to talk to you about the mission! Well, a general talk. Nothin' too serious - [ he promises, or tries to, hands lifting some in reassurance, ]
-- we just wanted to let you know about some of the equipment, and talk to you about the teams. You might like some of it. Got magic in your world?
[ He asks it with a cheeky cadence, like he knows it might be something new and interesting. Then again, from what Inigo was saying, this guy liked the sound of swords. So why not magic, too? ]
[Who doesn't like the sound of swords? Sword fights in movies and games always looked so cool after all!]
Yeah, yeah- Inigo. Nice bloke, we've got a deal going on between us. [He'll take a seat next to Tidus and leans his arm against the table.]
Swore I felt my ears burning, now I know why. [Dennis smirks, but nods.] Got all sorts of time, 'preciate you guys helping me get situated. Lotta shit is still pretty crazy to me right now.
[Oooh magic, he keeps hearing about people being able to do magic here.]
Nah. Just in books, movies... games, not real though.
[ Tidus does grin extra to the 'ears burning' part, a tip of his head, as if to say, 'caught me', even if he was the one to share it. ]
Well, we've got nothing like throwing fireballs or water at enemies, but we've got some devices that'll let you support people - barriers, healing, that type of thing. I'll show you. [ Oh, a thought does come to him though, indicated by the raise of his brow. ]
You got good aim? A good throwing arm, [ he clarifies. ]
[ That has Tidus thinking, but he shouldn't be getting ahead of himself; giving one nod, and then giving Dennis a pat on the shoulder as he speaks up. ]
Alright, how 'bout you get some breakfast first, then me and Inigo'll meet you in the sports gym. First one, hard to miss. [ As if the clarification is needed. ] Sound good? More room to show you what we've got in there - plus, I don't wanna keep a guy from his breakfast.
[Can't start a good day without a hearty breakfast!]
See ya in a bit.
[Dennis gives a little wink and pushes up from his seat. He'll give Tidus a pat on the arm in passing as he heads off to get food.
As agreed on he'll head to the sports gym Tidus told him about after stuffing his gob. It felt nice having something to do, besides chores and stuff. Though he'd been working with Inigo on their whole thing too, but kinda just felt like he was starting to belong?
Maybe he shouldn't like that. He should want to go home!]
[ Dennis gets a thumbs up as he goes by, but otherwise, now is the time for brekkie with a mornin' cuppa, get real British up in here, it's time to talk about the weather--
But after all that, Tidus is present at the gym as said. He's throwing a basketball into the hoop, and so not immediately paying attention to his surroundings. But in there with them is a - very likely, to Dennis - odd crowd of small blue creatures waiting under the hoop as the ball comes down. A few scatter, but the other few go for it, chasing it as it bounces out of the way, squeaking happily. They're about a foot in height, the ball just bigger than them. (And heavier, too.)
Or maybe he doesn't see the little things at all, only visible to those with a good heart, or well-intentioned. Either way, Inigo is surely paying attention to actually what's going on around them, and so if the guy gives any greeting first, Tidus will look over to Dennis afterwards, lifting a hand. ]
[ i'm just here to make this thread decidedly less british.
But Inigo is definitely greeting Dennis first - with a raise hand and a smile and all. Dennis has been really nice, so Inigo sure doesn't mind having a talk like this with him. And compared to the tiny blue creatures, which are really familiar and commonplace to Inigo now, he's more likely to pay attention to the guy entering the carriage. ]
Please just give him a short answer. [ He tells Dennis, nudging his head in Tidus's direction with a joking half-eyeroll. ] If you get him started about sports too much, he'll never stop.
Coming into the gym he hears the familiar sound of a basketball and sees Tidus hitting some hoops, along with some odd looking little creatures. He's momentarily distracted as Inigo greets him, waving in turn with a tight lipped smile. Heading over Tidus calls to him asking if they've got basketball where he's from and he almost answers, but then Inigo nudges him jokingly about it.
That gets him smile more loosely, chuckling a little.]
Yeah, we got basketball.
[Short and sweet! He did good, right Inigo?]
Hope I didn't make you wait long. Oh, uh who're your friends?
[Dennis motions to the blue creatures. They seem harmless, but they're still pretty odd to him at least.]
Inigo gets an unimpressed face for his call out, a hand waved out dismissively too. Screw that guy, ruining all his fun. He's lost for ball for now though as the tiny creatures continue to declare it theirs, dancing and hopping like true ghibli-wannabes.
So Tidus rests his hands on his waist, a quirked smile on his face as he answers Dennis. ]
They're higgledies! Harmless. Better to hang out in the gym with than that guy. [ A needed nod in Inigo's direction, followed by a glance. Yeah, PAYBACK. ] Don't worry, they'll entertain themselves. But if you can see 'em, that's good! If we ever get a job that needs a lot of water, I'll let you borrow one.
[ Which probably needs more than that for a guy to be comfortable with a tiny sentient raindrop-looking thing, but the higgledies isn't why they're here, is it. ]
But first things first! Been wondering: What do you know about the different teams, and what they do? And what kind of action are you used to back home? You work out just for fun?
[ Please, Tidus isn't going to ignore Dennis's muscles here. Good stuff, bro. ]
[ Thanks for your cooperation, Dennis. He indeed did perfectly, keeping this conversation from devolving into sports talk. That's the last thing Inigo wants to do here.
.. although thinking about Dennis' muscles is getting pretty high up there really quickly too. Not because it's an unpleasant thing to think about, but more because that's going to distract Inigo so much that there's no way he's going to be able to keep his head in the game.
But the thought is slowly entering his mind now Tidus has mentioned the whole working out thing, and Inigo is finally.. starting to sneak a peek..
Ah.
Well.
Hm.
His cheeks are getting a little pink over here, but don't mind him. He's just patiently waiting for Dennis' answer. Totally normal. ]
[It's clear these two are good friends and the ribbing between them isn't meant maliciously and to that Dennis can't help but try to not chuckle. Tidus explanation of the... higgledies doesn't really clear much up, but they seem to be harmless so. That's good. Something something water? He can ask more later.
Right now he's being questioned on his knowledge of the teams and what he's used for "action". Well.]
Don't really know what each of the teams do, just know we go on these missions on worlds we stop at. Guess we can switch teams if we want? Couple folks told me that.
[Though he'll stick with purple for now, Tidus and others have been super nice and helpful so, why not see how it pans out?]
Uhh, action, I mean I'm a firefighter back home. The most fighting I've done is battling fire and helping people out of burning buildings.
[That's why he's getting sword lessons from yours truly standing beside him. Inigo who's turning into a tomato again. Dennis gives him a little nudge.]
Got this one helping me fumble 'bout with a sword, maybe he'll be able to make me into a decent fighter yet. Been working out too, was back home, trying to get in better shape for my job. Can't stop that just cause I'm trapped on a space train.
[He's not super fit, but he's young and got some decent arms on him. A work in progress!]
[ The word 'firefighter' perks Tidus's attention, if just for a moment. Not where he's going to interrupt the guy, waiting until he's done to speak up, while Inigo's current gay crisis passes him obliviously. ]
You need a workout partner? Train sucks for it, yeah, but there's plenty you can do just with your own body. The bars in the training room's good for some pull-ups too. [ He points a thumb at himself. ] I did sports professionally. Working out around here's the one thing keeping me sane.
[ Catch him running around the entire sports gym every morning. Well, except this one. ]
But hey, a firefighter - not bad. Purple gets into fighting, but there was a job where you guys had to help get people out under rubble after an earthquake. [ He looks at Inigo here; he'd know better, being with the team more during that time. ]
Blue's a good team to think about too, or to look at when we get the mission jobs. [ He raises a hand, his SCA on the wrist. ] They're both about looking after people, working close with them. Last mission had them finding people to evacuate them to safety while Purple protected the city they were in.
[ Don't nudge this delicate gay boy with those decent arms!! He might just die!
Thankfully Inigo seems to somehow - don't ask, even he doesn't know, perhaps it's just sheer strength of will - snap himself out of it, quickly shaking his head as he's slowly coming back down to reality. And the conversation. ]
Hmm, sometimes the purple mission is just all about fighting, so in those cases you could look and see if there's anything about the blue team's mission you could help out with. [ Since those do tend to skew a little closer towards working directly with people, right? Trying to keep them safe, or trying to help with the rubble back in Terran..
(Though he doesn't like to think much about the latter.) ]
Like Tidus said-- last time around they were evacuating people, but apparently they found some starving people in a cave too which they had to help out. That, and break through the cave in, something like that.. [ Look, it's been a while! He wasn't with the blue team! This is the best he can recall it. ]
Though I don't think any team has ever had to put out actual fires.
[ Not that he remembers, anyway? Maybe that time the red team had to go to some really hot part of the world..? ]
Alas Dennis is oblivious to his gay dilemma, the thought wouldn't even cross his mind that someone, much less a decent guy like Inigo would think anything like that about him. He's just some average bloke from London after all!]
Between the two've you I'm gonna be a fit swordsman in no time.
[But he nods to Tidus, 100% taking up that offer he's laying down.]
Evacuations definitely more my speed, we dealt with that a lot on the job. But it's good there's a couple teams that work with helping civilians. Dunno how good I'd be at putting fires out here though, 'less you guys got a firetruck and water source on hand.
[ Hah- ] Actually, those guys worked with a paramedic firefighter on another mission. [ He cocks his head, indicating to the little raindrop-shaped creatures. One has managed to get on top of the basketball! --and is now tumbling off as another higgledy rolls it. ]
We had a mission- Nion? [ he glances at Inigo for that, ] -where part of a jungle caught fire, me and a few others and the higgledies put it out. They can control water - make it pop from outta nowhere! [ It's magic, 'arry. ] I'll give you one, before a next mission. Good for keeping hydrated - and me and Inigo'll be able to track you if anything goes wrong.
[ Which he hasn't explained how, but there's another point Tidus wanted to get on. ]
Orange gets a lot of investigating and fixing, but I'd keep an eye on what jobs Blue and Purple get. You're used to getting involved with danger! That's a lot more than some of the people here.
[ A beat. ] Would you be up for watching people's backs, making sure they're getting healing? Staying fed?
[ Please, is this thirsty boy over here not truly the one who ought to be hydrated.
But on a more serious note: ]
Tidus is right. There's a lot of people who are pulled into this place who don't have any experience with dangerous situations. [ Which is a huge complaint to have with the train, even if he's tucking that away, since this isn't the moment for it. ] So they'd already profit from having someone like you around, even if you wouldn't know how to fight as well as others.
[ There's only so much their training before the mission can do. It's going to be real soon, probably sometime close after the next platform stop, if the past is anything to go by. ]
You're probably the type who can keep a cool head at moments like that, right?
[ He'd have to be, if he deals with fire that often. ]
Oh- so like they just make water? How do you make em do it?
[Just ask nicely? Say please water on that? Is there a manual for how to use your friendly higgledies? Dennis looks away from their shenanigans back to Tidus.]
Yeah, yeah course. Long as we've got the supplies I can help with first aid. Don't got fancy magic like some've the the folks here. Gotta use good ol' fashion medicine and bandages.
[He'll shove his hands in his pants pockets and looks at Inigo now, the poor boy has gotten less flushed now, good for him.]
Mm, have to keep your head on straight when everything goes sideways in my line of work, otherwise your liable to get yourself or someone else killed. [He feels weird taking himself up like that and shrugs, looking a little embarrassed almost.]
Course helps if you got a good team supporting ya, not too worried if everyones like you guys.
You get all sorts around here, but I think Purple works pretty well together. [ It's an assessment he needs to look at Inigo for, his own judgment on it not all there; but then, he doesn't doubt it, either. ]
Anyway, you want a higgledy to do something, you just ask. --hey! [ He's turned his head, and the whole lot of them stop in their ball game, heads turning, and what's meant to be 'Can one of you come here?' turns into the whole lot of them deciding, on their very tiny feet, to come over. Squeaking, small and cute.
They crowd around by Tidus's feet, but a few go straight over to Inigo, jumping to be picked up; while Tidus, distracted by how to say this next command without getting the obvious result, attempts to not get chaos when he asks: ]
I need one of you to make water appear.
[ Please. One. One lot of water!
The one good thing: Is that they scatter some away, make some distance; before making Tidus's request of 'one' lot of water. One from each higgledy, making appear high above their heads balls of water that grow larger until they're the size of beach balls, hovering, floating above their heads, always keeping to a certain distance--
oh, except for the one higgledy that waves its tiny arms in the direction of the other three higgledy, splashing it at them, causing their own lot to come crashing them on them.
they chose violence this morning
(it's okay, they're getting back up and start throwing smaller water balls at each other in good fun) ]
[ Inigo knows what chaos is about to be unleashed here.
He's seen Tidus's tiny higgledies in action. He knows what they get like once they start pulling out the water. In fact, he's so used to this happening, that Inigo is quick to scoop up the ones that are starting to climb his legs before hurrying over to Dennis' side, trying to get out of the splash zone.
Just in time for the remaining tiny blue creatures to start splashing each other. He knew it. ]
They like having fun. [ He remarks to Dennis, though there's an almost dry, amused edge to it. Because clearly the other can see that with his own eyes. ] But they're pretty helpful. They also tend to just generally make you feel a little bit better by being near you.
[ While he's saying that, there's actually a tiny higgledy escaping from Inigo's arms and starting to climb up Dennis' arm, up to the other's shoulder-- it's exploring! ]
[When Inigo joins him, sporting his own higgledies, Dennis gets the feeling it's going to be a show. It doesn't take long for Tidus' solid attempt at order to devolve into cute wet chaos.
Dennis laughs at it all, it's clearly all in good fun so it seems.]
Can't knock em for that.
[Having fun? Generally much better than not having fun. When he suddenly has a new pal on his shoulder Dennis peers at the little blue friend.]
Uh, hey bud. You're welcome to have a seat long as you ain't gonna make any water.
[Huh? Water? You want water new friend? The higgledy squeaks and starts to make a ball of water, cause Dennis said water! It can do water!]
Wha- nono, no not that.
[Dennis is quick to snatch the higgledy up and hold it at arms length. It's got a big ball of water now, seeming pleased with itself.]
... thanks I guess? Good job?
[And then it drops the water at Dennis feet, squeaking. Thanks new friend, it's happy you approve of it's hard work!]
Can they make the water disappear too? Otherwise we're gonna need to grab some mops.
[ Pah!! Pah!! Look at this chaos! Who do they take after? Tidus has the very unimpressed expression of any parent would have at the chaos wrought on by their sly children, though the higgledies are far older than him. A hand rests on his his waist at the mess of the gym now, and how 'play with the basketball' has become 'play with water balls', which have at least now been decreased in size as the higgledies start going after each other - sans the two with Inigo and Dennis, fortunately.
Except for that one water bomb dropped by Dennis's feet. Please!! ]
Depends on how cheeky they're feeling, [ Tidus answers, even with the look Inigo's way. For his expression though, there is a hint of amusement about him. ] They're a pain, but they're good help. They're from Roland's world - that's the Purple lead. Looks younger than he is. [ 'Cause you've gotta share that. ]
But they're not what I wanted to show you. [ He's sighing, sighing at this turn of this very serious get together! ...a smile tugging on his face anyway, afterwards. ] If you're willing to help with supplies and first aid, we've got something good for carrying it. I'll show you how to use it - we give some of the supply runners these.
[ But first, he brings a hand up - and in it, with a light sparkle of gold dust that disappears as soon as it appears, is now a buckler-shaped device. ...or, whatever it looks like to Dennis. ]
I'm gonna show you how to do this trick.
[ Please don't ruin how cool he's being about this, bro. ]
Though he's mostly just teasing, with that grin on his face. He'll give Tidus a moment to show it off though without Inigo being the peanut gallery over here - especially since he has Dennis' question to deal with. Even if Tidus already answered it, Inigo knows he can help the mess that's starting to form here - if not just a little.
So while he figures Tidus might need a moment to show it off, Inigo's chest starts glowing, and a moment later a creature appears - similar to the tiny blue higgledies everywhere, but a little bigger than them, and this one is instead yellow, actually wearing a cute little sundress and a sunhat. Because it's stylish.
The higgledy starts running around and glowing, making some of the water evaporate. Look, he's just saving them mopping time later! And also making sure no one slips in the middle of this demonstration, since that would be super uncool. ]
kazoo 25 - (with inigo, but he'll pop in later)
But regardless of reasons, it still might be something of a surprise for Dennis that when he should walk in, he'll soon hear a 'Dennis!' call to him; and a familiar figure rising from the long dining table, showing a hand in greeting, with obvious intentions of making his way over to him.

[Dennis asks, glancing at Inigo.]

no subject
[ He's ruining it.
