[ Over a series of ten days, Dennis receives five messages, all printed on plain white paper, folded neatly, and tucked into five individually sealed envelopes. Each envelope has a number written very small and very neat in the top right hand corner in black ink.

The first message, in an envelope marked with a '2', reads:

( When I was older, I met a man. He loved me, and I loved him, but he never gave me the chance to tell him, he never gave me the time to figure it out. He went away.

I met a woman. She loved me before I loved her, and for a while we loved each other at the same time. I took something from her, something she loved, but I had no choice. She didn't understand why, couldn't see the larger picture, wouldn't understand that I was trying to save her. I ruined her without even trying. She left me. )
